Remember Now and Lady Blue Shanghai







I absolutely love these two short films, which have produced quite a stir in the last week. Remember Now is Karl Lagerfeld's latest venture into Short Film and was presented in St Tropez, at the same time as the Cannes Film Festival.
Lady Blue Shanghai is a commission of David Lynch as part of the new Dior opening and campaign in Shanghai. It features the signature lynch stylistics and music but it feels timeless and modern.
The two films could not be more different and they derive from pure calculated commercial intent.
More striking then, is their artistic character, as I feel Lagerfeld and Lynch have really excelled in their craft. Their commercial artistry does not fail to satisfy.

Routines


All Singers have funny routines to get themselves ready for the big moment. Everything is possible, but above all one becomes hyper sensitive to ones own voice. Sam here is running those Tenor Scales as he clasps onto his cup of Tea, already quite in 'the Zone.' Sammy is great. I believe he listens to Drum and Base as he walks to the Royal Academy in the Mornings. Thanks for the picture!

Who Cares?

As I wonder through the Tate Modern today with a good friend, I think to myself; 'the thing is, with all this modern art, it is an awful mess really.'

Masses of people coming and going, the floor spaces labeled 'state of flux' or 'poetry and dream', and the Turbine Hall made up as a fair, a chaotic exhibit of arts, of all manners, shapes and sizes, and a stage with arty song distorted, unrecognisable. I wonder confused, and there is no sense. There is too much, so many ideas, the conglomerate that is all this art is incomprehensible, I walk away, somewhat dull, untouched.

Ten years Tate Modern! Unforeseen visitor numbers! Explore! Be entertained! The Art experiment of our young century, a triumph, the shape of all new things. 'Something is missing.'

Setting out to judge what is good or bad, it is not mine to make. It is the way of our time that the art of our age is proclaimed. It is not chosen. It rests with future generations to be the judge; we say; 'their call to make.'
I think, we may have lost our right to make a mark. We have conceded to the fact, that we are incapable of producing a statement of our own. A statement, not just of any kind, but that which makes us who we are, a statements of greatness, of strife towards eternity. While we are so many, while we have opened up a multi media universe, we are all ...

'The Tate always confuses me', I end up saying to my friend. 'This cannot really be it, can it, the future of art?'
'I think this is it', she says.

I wonder, if anyone else really cares ...

Backstage ... Giasone

As term time at the RAM is slowly fading into examination period, RAM Opera staged their final opera production of Giasone by Francesco Cavalli. This is a beautiful 17th century piece, ideally suited for a larger student cast. The particular edition was produced by Jane Glover, Head of Opera at the Royal Academy.

Haidee Becker


Haidee Becker is a wonderful artist, who was recently awarded much attention through her portrait paintings of the entire cast of Jerusalem, at London's West End. Through a chance encounter Haidee ended up painting an entire cast in daily evening sessions at the theatre. For the last couple of weeks they have been exhibited at the Redfern Gallery in Soho, a former brothel, sitting peacefully amongst local soho restaurant favourites and various porn and sex shops. Out of sheer curiosity I wondered into Haidee's temporary gallery space/atelier and in no time we ended up chatting. Haidee is great company and her work is very fine. Her portraits are true likenesses, cast on bright colours of red, some broken by lines of white. Her subjects are at angles, but they appear flattened and frozen as if in waiting anticipation, their distinct canvas backgrounds adding inseparable tension. Its not been easy for Haidee and rents in Soho are extortionate but somehow everything seems at ease and comforting sitting amongst all these portraits. "I m a Gambler" says Haidee, after she has told us of her family and children. Sometimes you just have to gamble in life. How true, I am thinking. "Push yourself to the limit. Only then you realise how powerful you really are." Its a bit like in her portraits: They are all or nothing and it makes them striking. I walk away thinking, it really is all possible: Those who dare can achieve everything because only they are truly knowing.
