Der Lindenbaum

On Thursday, Christopher Maltman and Graham Johnson will be giving a recital of Schubert's Winterreise at the Wigmore Hall. I am particularly looking forward to this occasion after having seen a film of Winterreise by Petr Weigl. Weigl is a Czech filmmaker and his film is a beautiful little piece of cinema lead by the amazing voice of Brigitte Fassbaender.

Weigls film follows the winter's journey of a group of travellers, brought together by fate, as they make their way through a winterland. A young ballerina is amongst them, dying, after having collapsed on the stage in front of her mothers eyes. We hear the eery tune of Der Lindenbaum, death taking hold of the young girl as she leads her final dance.

I found Weigl's film very moving and I think it is an incredibly powerful way to present Schubert's song cycle.
